The Story of Past
Present Future...
In
the spring of 1982 Jerry Woods saw that the future of comic book
sales lay in the direct market and decided to open a comic shop.
Tucked in the corner of a quiet little plaza on Lantana Rd. Past Present Future was born. Soon
after opening, young comic collector Mark Gallo was searching
for a copy of Marvel Fanfare issue 3 and he found his way to PPF
for the first time. His dedication and passion for the hobby
caught the attention of Jerry and he offered Mark a position.
Little did Mark know, taking this, his first job would alter the
course of his life forever.
Before too long Past
Present Future became THE comic book destination in Palm Beach
County and by 1986 Jerry and Mark expanded into the north end
opening the North Lake store. With a growing customer base the
original Lantana location became too constricting and in1988 the
time came to move up the street the larger Lantana & Congress
store.
With two hugely
successful locations and hundreds of loyal customers Jerry
decided that it was time to pass along the torch and in 1991
Mark Gallo who started out just nine years earlier working for
credit became the full owner of Past Present Future Comics &
Games. It was a new decade and new era for the store as well as
the comic industry as a whole.
The first major
expansion for PPF in the 90s was the East Boca location opening
in January 1993. But this was nothing compared to the opening of
the massive West Palm Beach location on the corner of Military
Trail and Cherry Road on September 1st 1993. To help
celebrate the new location PPF held a massive in store event in
April of ‘94 featuring special guest David Prowes (Darth Vader
from Star Wars).
By 1995 it became
clear that the West Palm Beach location was creating competition
for the North Lake store, so Mark closed that location moving
those customers to the more centrally located store. The Lantana
location was closed in 96 for the same reason.
The remainder of
1996 saw growth in the south end as East Boca moved to a new
West Boca location to reach a wider selection of customers. The
biggest move in 1996 came with the opening of the Lauderhill
location, this marked PPF’s first expansion out of Palm Beach
County. Past Present Future no longer belonged to West Palm
Beach … it became “South Florida’s premier comics and gaming
chain”.
By the late 90s the
comic industry was changing and things were shifting as PPF
expanded further into gaming becoming a true destination for
miniature and collectible card games. In 1998 the Boca location
was sold and later became Docking Bay 94.
From 2001 to 2002
Past Present Future experimented with a mall location opening a
shop in the Boynton Beach Mall. Though very successful this
location proved to be logistically difficult to maintain. As the
troubled first decade of the new millennium moved forward the
Lauderhill location was sold in September of 2007 to become
Cross Roads Comics, leaving PPF with only one location for the
first time since 1986. But this didn’t last long on October 30th
2010 Past Present Future opened the massive Davie location and
then in August of 2012 Cross Roads Comics was sold back to PPF
becoming the Lauderhill store once again.
With three strong
locations in West Palm Beach, Davie & Lauderhill, plans are
already in the works for more locations to open in the coming
years, Past Present Future is truly South Florida’s premier
comics and gaming chain!
PPF not only has the
best selection of new comics now they are offering a wider
selection of high grade comics, games, collectibles, t-shirts,
Lego, statues, toys, manga, and so much more. There has never
been a better time be a customer of Past Present Future Comics &
Games. |
